'Journey by Moonlight' is unlike any novel I've read: the atmosphere is both dreamy & descriptive, rich in history and detail. The story itself is quite absurd, though mostly in a good way, but the real thing for me was the writing. Even as adults they are still seeking each other out and carrying the burden of those they lost, such as one who committed suicide. It's close but no banana. But in fact it is delightfully funny, its Magyar gloom lightened by a rush through Italy - Perugia, Gubbio, Assisi, the Umbrian plain, an innocent American art history student, ghosts, complicated sexuality perfectly and simply described, and, like all great artists, very sound on fellatio. The characters are interesting, and the dialogue is excellent. Published in 1937, I was surprised at how modern this book feels, perhaps because of the candid way that human emotions and entanglements are described.Mihaly is the real star of the novel though. The New York Times Review of Books designated Mr. Rix's version a classic because of Szerb, and not because of JOURNEY BY MOONLIGHT -- a mistranslation of the original "Utas es holdvilag" or "Traveler and the Moonlight. I found out only after finishing it that Journey by Moonlight is the novel most loved by all cultivated Hungarians. The novel begins with Mihály and Erzsi, both of solidly Budapest bourgeois background, on honeymoon in Italy. The odds that I will finish this book are, according to most statisticians, negligible, so I should just dispense with the charade and chuck this bitch on the discard pile. Those friends, drinking and smoking with no adult supervision, became so dedicated to each other they became their own family. One for the wishlist rather than rushing out to get. This one has Boy, am I ever having a problem finishing books lately! The bus. Journey by Moonlight is a beautiful book, the sort of book that stays imprinted on some soft part of you for a long time.
