You need those 4x You're probably right. I've actually been struggling with which to run in modern for Jund. In higher powered formats the life loss is much less relevant.
My favorite point in an aggro game is when they have no cards in hand, will probably draw mana and 3 drops, while Ill be getting a full hand and ensuring control till a win con. Thoughtseize may not be an optimal choice v. some decks, but its never a "dead" card. I have all 12 shocks, and then a mix of scylands. Probably. I still like duress sometimes in vintage, but everywhere else it's IoK or thoughtseize due to the increasing importance of creatures in all formats. If cards were worth $$ based on their power level only, brainstorm, delver, lightning bolt, swords, etc would all be 30$ or more. But, for an Esper control deck that's already running a lot of shocklands, I'm actually tempted to run Duress to save myself the life. I play modern where Thoughtseize is a staple card of almost all decks that run black while Duress is barely a viable option.

I understand how it's "better", but the perceived gulf between them seems absurd. IoK is a dead card against most of those decks since all the really want to do is run Gifts or Tron into a early wurmcoil.
