I will say my tank gauge still does work and I just installed it because it was cool.I just installed a wifi smart oil gauge. They would just screw out. Thing is amazing and was easy to install. I stick tested the tank and the tank only has 1 ½ inches of oil in it. Unscrew entire gauge and install a new one. The oil level sender has a ground on one side and the other wire/side goes to the gauge. I'm never had one of these gadgets before. I called back the oil company and they said it is common occurance. We also stock hydrostatic Oil Tank Gauges that are very easy to install and need no electrical supply to work. My gauge has three bars for the oil level and that should show the level in the engine tank, but it doesn't.

Free it up from the top, and see if that takes care of it.
