These organizations are designated the SSEP was designed to be a keystone initiative for U.S. National STEM education, and to help inspire America’s next generation of scientists and engineers. Read More broadly, SSEP is about a commitment to student ownership in exploration, to science as journey, and to the joys of learning.Of special note – SSEP is garnering extensive media coverage at local, regional, and national levels (over 1,200 articles to date). A participating  pre-college community typically engages 300+ students (at least 100 students) in microgravity experiment design and proposal writing. This Phase 2 of SSEP provides communities of grade 5-16 students the ability to design and propose real microgravity experiments, just like professional researchers, for operation by the astronauts aboard the International Space Station. We want SSEP to provide routine student researcher access to space via commercial payloads; to leverage the power of such access into a STEM education program delivered at the local level across an entire community; and to serve a network of such communities across the nation—even internationally.Excellent SSEP Overview It is mounted on the External Payload Facility of the European Space Agency’s Columbus module. The final selection is carried out by the SSEP National Step 2 Review Board, which meets at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. The program is thus on the leading-edge of national approaches to science education while also inspiring and exciting students through the wonder of space.By Jessica Scarfuto, Contributing Author • October 25, 2018The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, Inc.

Getting good grades, while important to many students, does not necessarily lead to an increased interest in a subject.SSEP Team Penicillium Mold Growth from Burleson ISD presenting their research at the 2018 SSEP National Conference at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. “You have to make sure it’s relevant, and then you can get them engaged to the highest rigor you like,” said Bender Jutzi. As an authentic learning competition, SSEP does just that.

The first two SSEP payloads flew in 2011 aboard space shuttles Endeavour and Atlantis on the STS-134 and STS-135 missions, respectively. With the help of their teachers, students split into small teams of typically three to five students and learn how to do the most basic and often overlooked part of science: experimental design and proposal writing.Over a nine-week period, students come up with research questions and think of ways to answer the questions within certain parameters set as part of the competition. The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program is proud (and stunned) to report that there were a total of 447 proposals submitted from student teams across the 16 communities participating in SSEP on STS-134.

But for him, it was totally worth it. The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) is designed to teach students to become professional scientists by having them undertake an authentic research project. The ISS Current Location tracker above was developed by the European Space Agency (ESA). It was a unique opportunity that allowed the students to not only learn about a new bacterium but also learn about government policies and international collaboration in the sciences.Perhaps the most important goal of SSEP is that for many students, the program fosters true engagement in STEM subjects that goes beyond merely achieving high test scores. SSEP is a partner in the Space Station Explorers consortium, a growing community of ISS National Lab partner organizations that aims to leverage the space station to engage learners in valuable STEM education experiences.

Once in space, ISS crew members can open the clamps at different time intervals to start and stop the experiment. That’s where SSEP comes in,” said Leslie Bender Jutzi, Burleson’s chief academic innovation officer.Recognizing the power of space to inspire and engage students, Jimerson’s first project for the district was SSEP, a program in which they have participated and excelled every year since. What better way to celebrate the 50th anniversary than engaging a community of hundreds of students in the real space program, and real spaceflight, on the frontiers of human exploration. We invite your community to use your SSEP Mission Patch Art and Design Competitions to both capture your community’s participation in America’s Space Program through SSEP, and celebrate these most remarkable journeys undertaken by the human race 50 years ago.
