Nevertheless, this is another enjoyable Martin & Lewis picture that gets a recommendation from me. While there's lots of classic Martin & Lewis here, this film does have a serious story line...2, in fact. But Ted begins to steal the show. Ostensibly set in the 1930s during the sunset of vaudeville, it is pure corn but for the beauty and voice of Polly Bergen, who suffers through the nonsense with style. Cinemark Renewed and Cancelled TV Shows 2020 I haven't seen this movie in years, but a flick like this one just cannot be forgotten! I LOVE this film!

Was this review helpful? … The Stooge was filmed between February 19 and March 24, 1951, and although it was filmed before two other Martin and Lewis films, Sailor Beware and Jumping Jacks, this film was withheld from distribution by Paramount because they were concerned about the audience's reaction to the way Martin treated Lewis in the movie. I had heard of both of them and seen them on TV here and there but had never seen a movie with the two of them. Before the end of the film each character will strip away their narcissistic tendencies, hers through self-sacrifice by becoming a scrapbook queen, his by turning to the bottle and nearly destroying his burgeoning performing career along with any relationship he's had with anyone female or idiot. I would imagine that after their breakup four years after this film was made, both Martin and Lewis could look back on this film as being a bit of a premonition of things to come. I like to see what's just coming out in theaters and these older movies, well I usually just think of them as having poor quality and over drawn out moments. Still, it is worth watching for fans of the comic duo and for fans of Jerry in particular.
After all, so many elements are reminiscent of the real team of Martin & Lewis that it's hard to know how much is fiction and how much is autobiographical. Bill and Ted climb to the top of the showbiz heap with a riotous act wherein Bill's onstage singing is interrupted by Ted's heckling from the audience (not unlike Martin and Lewis' genuine nightclub act).
Maybe they wanted a few more straight out comedy hits for Martin and Lewis before giving this one to the public. And what a coincidence that both her and Ms. Treen are in this picture since Ms. Bavier replaced Ms. Treen as the housekeeper in the first episode of "The Andy Griffith Show"!
