Ryan Bingham enjoys living out of a suitcase for his job, travelling around the country firing people, but finds that lifestyle threatened by the presence of a potential love interest, and a new hire. I have had several people telling me about it though, and they made it sound so interesting, like such a clever satire of American corporate life and the emptiness of the modern business world, that I knew I wanted to read it.
We are who we are and that's it, but to acknowledge this fact is unbearable. The next week, the guests return, to find their host stumble in, looking disheveled and tired.

It's an interesting metaphor for the deeper message I think the book tires to promote, which is so many of us try to find meaning in life, either through climbing the corporate latter or marrying the perfect man to show you're capable and worthy of creating the perfect family, that in the end we realize, often too late, that obtaining these goals doesn't change us in the least. Hey, wasn't there some, like, Oscar-nominated film by the same name with George CloEarly on in "Air," Kirn feebly mentions something about a novel having no plot. September 24th 2002

Author Kirn implicates us all, but with good humor, and since he skewers everyone, with fairness. The pilot regaled us with his exploits of cruising around with Eddie Rickenbacker and the dogfights against the Red Baron. He truly does believe what he espouses as he lives out of his carry-on suitcase (his apartment in Omaha is really in name only), he is not close to his siblings (although he does do a favor for his sister while on his travels), nor does he have or want a significant person in his life. Ryan also learns that some of the choices he's made have not always been the correct one.Ryan Bingham's job is to fire people from theirs. To laugh again, at these things that drive one mad, is worth the price of admission. (The sections in my local library branch aren't hard and fast rules so much as general suggestions, largely ignored.) But Kirn says the movie, which he took no part in writing, is understandably different from the book. A land baron tries to reconnect with his two daughters after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident. In this case, a whole new character had to be introduced. I like airplanes. It wasn’t an amazing story, the characters weren’t very compelling. But if you liked the movie a lot, don't bother with the book.
