I was interested in this as it was advertised as a more ambitious version of the superb Koyaanisqatsi & Powaqqatsi films which I think are excellent and so well designed and produced. Baraka is a 1992 non-narrative documentary film directed by Ron Fricke. The city people are depicted as garbage, contrasting low quality of life in Asian factories, high rise slums, and similar looking cemeteries. I could tell she agreed just to be polite, but by the end of the movie she was really interested and said she was surprised by how good it is.
What holds this film together is awe. Baraka & Chronos, although visually stunning in some parts just don't cut the mustard in the way those earlier films do though. The accompanying music is haunting at times and always interesting. It is that amazing. Minute 47 will mess with your mind along with 1h 37 minutes.

This is a really wonderful film, really a meditation on what it means to be alive on the planet Earth.
I saw this film in school and knew I had to have it for myself, to show everyone who was willing to watch it. After the release of Samsara we decided to order it for our home movie collection, and in many ways it is my favorite of the two films, offering a more intimate look at the inhabitants of Earth. I first saw this when I was away couple weeks ago and it was left for guests to watch, I was sat there for the full length of the film, didn’t turn away it was that special! A collection of expertly photographed scenes of human life and religion. This video gets the one for this year! Thirdly, the cameraperson/director just got better at his art. When you hear what the cinematographers and producers went through to achieve this incredible collection of shots, you will likely want to view the film again, and will then have a keener sense of why it is so special. First of all, it is shot on 70mm not 35mm so there quality is multiplied by four. The visuals are stunning...but oh-h so frustrating to watch...because there is NO dialogue. It is that film made much much better. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Everytime a new shot appears it is like opening a new christmas present and wondering what is inside, gradually peeling off the layers until you see it. A collection of stories about and images of our world, offering an immersion to the core of what it means to be human. I use the word "profound" about once a year. However, whatever you want to know about the film you learn only by viewing the extras on the disc, and THEN the real appreciation for the film grows exponentially!! Directed by Ron Fricke. Lots of nice shots of various things. Secondly, motion control tracking was used, which means that all those clever speeded up pieces of film now get to move at the same time. With aerial footage from fifty-four countries, 'Home' is a depiction of how Earth's problems are all interlinked. One for the ages. Having been a longtime fan of the music of DeadCanDance and Lisa Gerrard, both films are to be treasured.
