After much trial and error, I’ve got the hang of it pretty well now, and even now the game is super challenging. I think the reason that it has a number of negative reviews is that the developers have deliberately chosen not to explain the game play mechanics much in the tutorial, to reinforce the story. However, as you play through the game you'll acquire new equipment from the 100s of different combinations available and have the total freedom to freely swap between them and try out new builds between campaigns.
