Pull off the road where the guardrail ends and you can park behind it. If you do take the hiking trail from the parking lot to the south, which this article describes as "Thunder Rock Cove", the hike is a couple of miles, it is pretty mild and comfortable, but there are some sections where there are steep and dangerous drop offs right at the edge of the trail. Both routes take you across Ministry of Defence land, so please check that it’s open and keep to the path. Also, at a low tide, there is a short cave to walk further south to a third beach, which is actually the beach below Thunder Rock Cove. At low tide, it is possible to head south to a second beach. Excited to venture to this location; hoping the minus tide cooperates - have to check that soon. This may be in part due the walk required to reach it – guests can choose from either a 2-mile coastal walk from Lulworth Cove, or a more direct route from the village itself. It’s nestled in the peace and quiet of Arne RSPB reserve, and can only be reached through hidden parks and walkways through woods and heathland. Sat in the shadow of Golden Cap, the highest point in the Jurassic Coast, it provides some spectacular views to watch the sun set across Lyme Bay. The site is home to several species of birds and dolphins have even be spied in the surrounding waters...Depsite not being far from the hustle of Poole harbour, you might be surprised by how secluded Shipstaw beach seems. Shell fossils, reptiles and ammonites have all been found here in the past, so cast your gaze downwards and see what you can find! Follow the path down to the parking area, then there is a steep and somewhat challenging climb down a rock, across a small stream to a beach. Surprisingly, this quiet beach is just around the corner from the famous Lulworth Cove, but couldn’t be more different in terms of its tranquil atmosphere. The beach does have more facilities than the others on the list, including a small café, a caravan park and public bathrooms.One of the reasons this beach is gaining popularity are the views. Going into that parking area headed in from the N is probably ok. We missed it and had to come back to it -- be sure if you do that, to head in on an angle - we scrapped the bottom of the truck making it into the parking area. The caves are pretty cool. We do not call the trail system the "Pacific Coast Trail", we call it the "Oregon Coast Trail".
This hidden gem is certainly not an easy one to reach – the long walk along the coast is followed by a challenging 'Smugglers Path', which winds down the cliff before reaching a ladder-like device for delivering adventurous beach-goers onto the beach itself.
