But in depth and precision of characterization, in its ability to penetrate to the core of human experience, and in its creation of a picture of an entire wold, there are few, if any books, that can match it. Who can ask for more? I have yet to read any of the mythology stories however, only the King Arthur tales and the one about St.Elen of the hosts as she is one of the saints I have taken as a personal patron. There were interesting observations on human nature and various ethics and their outcomes, and an interesting commentary on both wealth status in combination, and on view of Love as extremely powerful (with potential for great harm or good) as I haven't come across much anymore in contemporary times. This view of marriage runs through most of the book, with both Dorothea and Lydgate experiencing failed marriages. The only reason I purchased it was to be able to increase text size to facilitate reading. everything that appears in modern day fairy stories and science fiction. I even remember cooking pork chops with one hand while holding the book in the other hand so that I could read while I cooked. There is much to learn about how intentions and character propel a life towards its ultimate purpose, reputation, and destination. The characters and story was engaging, and the descriptions created a definite emotional atmosphere, which I took with me throughout my day.

Good read if you like history and mythology. The story alternates between happy and sad but never fails to make you feel the emotions Hardy portrays - I really came to care about the characters and their lives and aspirations. I cannot tell you now what the book was about (that was almost 40 years ago), just that I loved it and devoured it, along with the pork chops:-). Thomas Hardy is one of my favorite authors of classic literature. To give a masterpiece of world literature, which is what Middlemarch is, only five stars is to fail to acknowledge its greatness. 3.3 out of 5 stars.
